Best Password Manager for Elderly Parents: Recovery and Cost
RoboForm puts emergency access and phone support on its cheapest paid plan. How NordPass, Keeper Security and 1Password compare for an older parent.
Privacy-focused password manager that keeps your vault on your own device for offline use, with sync through the cloud storage you choose.
Most password managers keep your vault on the vendor's servers. Enpass keeps the encrypted database on your own device and lets you sync it through iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or WebDAX if you want it on more than one machine. Enpass itself never sees the data.
For people who would rather not trust a centralized provider with their credentials, that offline-first model is the main reason to consider Enpass. The pricing follows the same independent line. The current 3-year plan is a one-off $49.99.
The lifetime license Enpass used to sell kept its appeal for buyers who refuse recurring billing. The free desktop tier has unlimited passwords, so it is easy to try on your main computer. A Cure53 audit completed in May 2023 reported no critical security vulnerabilities.
Enpass also holds ISO 27001:2022 certification and a SOC 2 Type II attestation. Between them, those cover most of what a privacy-focused individual buyer is likely to check before committing. The cryptography is conservative and well documented.
The local vault uses AES-256 encryption with 320,000 rounds of PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA512. On iOS and Android you can open it with Face ID or a fingerprint. G2's 4.6 out of 5 score and Capterra's 4.7 ease-of-use rating fit the offline-first pitch: reviewers consistently name flexible sync and the zero-knowledge model as the main reasons they stay.
The weaknesses are mostly in features that hosted platforms provide by default. The master account has no built-in two-factor authentication of its own. Enpass argues that the offline design makes traditional 2FA less relevant, but some reviewers find the workaround needlessly complicated.
The mobile free tier is capped at 25 entries, which Experte.com calls fairly useless without paying. Browser-extension reliability is a recurring complaint, especially on Windows, where users report the extension failing to connect until the browser is relaunched. Autofill also misses fields outside standard web forms.
Password sharing exports in plain text by default unless a pre-shared key is configured. There is no emergency access or dark-web monitoring. Customer support is limited to email and a knowledge base.
We think Enpass suits people who want full control over where their vault lives and will put up with a few rough edges to get it. The strong cryptography and the one-time purchase option add to its appeal for that buyer. If you want a polished, fully managed service with 24/7 support and dark-web alerts included, one of the hosted platforms will likely suit you better.
