Swiss password manager from Proton that encrypts every vault field and has built-in 2FA codes. Suits privacy advocates and people already using Proton.
LastPass vs Proton Pass compares an established, accessible password manager with a privacy-first newcomer from the makers of ProtonMail. LastPass has a generous free tier and mature features. Proton Pass is built on open-source transparency and Swiss privacy law, with integration into Proton's other privacy services.
Security & Privacy: Both use AES-256 encryption with zero-knowledge architecture. Proton Pass adds open-source code (anyone can audit it) and Swiss jurisdiction, which gives stronger privacy protections. LastPass has a longer track record but faces more scrutiny. Privacy advocates will find Proton Pass's open-source code compelling.
Feature Maturity: LastPass's features are more mature, including extensive form-filling, dark web monitoring (premium), better password sharing and an established security dashboard. Proton Pass covers the basics: password storage, 2FA generation, hide-my-email aliases and breach monitoring. LastPass is feature-complete. Proton Pass is newer (2023) and still developing.
Free Tier Comparison: Both have generous free tiers. LastPass's free tier gives unlimited passwords but limits devices. Proton Pass's free plan has unlimited passwords and full functionality. Existing Proton users will find that Pass works directly with ProtonMail and ProtonVPN.
User Experience: LastPass has the more established interface, with access to more features, though it shows its age. Proton Pass has a cleaner, simpler design that some people prefer. The browser extensions are comparable. Proton Pass's mobile apps have the more modern design, though LastPass's offer more features.
Privacy Focus: Proton Pass is ahead on transparency and privacy, thanks to its open-source code and Swiss jurisdiction. LastPass is more established but proprietary.
